Western Digital WD TV Live review

  by Paul Lester (pocket-lint.com) - Dec, 2009

pocket-lint.com

Western Digital had been rather quiet on the media streaming/jukebox market until it turned up with the barnstorming WD TV late last year; a device that offered the support, usability and performance the market was screaming for and only lacked the...

Easy to configure and use, excellent interface, good performance and format support, great value for money

No built-in wireless, access to additional online content could be better

It's a shame the WD TV Live doesn't quite tick all the boxes, but for the money you're still getting a very impressive streamer and jukebox

WD TV HD Media Player

Will this bridge the HD divide?

Wide file support, intuitive and slick interface, potentially a convenient media "bridge" for some users

We found that music, photos and movies played back smoothly and the WD TV was a pleasure to use. Combined with a discreet slick design, and a simple to use interface, for some it will be a real winner

Allows you to bring HD content onto your screen without spending much

Small and compact, HDMI output, good up scaling

Price, playback speed (both fast and slow, no AV sync issues); you'll need to move your burnt backup media to your HDD again

WD TV review

Would you like to connect any existing hard drive to an HD TV, allowing you to play music or video files as store through it? With the WD TV from Western Digital you can do just that. We take a look.

Connects any USB hard drive to a HD television

Can't read iPod song names properly, can't play copy-protected songs from iTunes Store

Apple supremo Steve Jobs described the Apple TV media player as nothing more than a hobby. Here in the UK we didn't even get the price cut they got in the US almost a year ago, leaving the Apple TV looking pretty over priced - especially the £195 model...

Western Digital WD TV (HD Media Player)

  by Chris Jager (goodgearguide.com.au) - Dec, 2008

As we stride purposefully into the 21st century and beyond, more and more people are storing digital content on their computers -- especially when it ...

Hassle-free set up, user-friendly interface, extensive file support, tailor-made for HD TVs

HDMI audio occasionally out of sync with video, sluggish and tiny remote

If you want an easy, hassle-free way to transfer HD content to your TV, you could do a lot worse than the WD TV. While short on fancy features, it offers a simple solution for computer-free media playback, including high-definition movies. Highly...

WDTV Live Hub Is Like Methadone for Media Junkies

  by John Marrin (wired.com) - Nov, 2010

Media streamers typically don't have a fat 1-TB hard drive attached. This one does.

It’s a streamer! It’s a server! Robust format support. USB keyboard compatible. Extremely easy to set up, especially remote-admin features. A/V quality is sharper than Carl Sagan's intellect. Simple and responsive interface. 1080p resolution: Suck it,...

You can only search and browse for content on one device at a time. Cables and full manual not included. No built-in Wi-Fi and no Hulu support? We no like. Online streams can be slow to start. Some features can get buried in backwater sections of menu....

Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player

  by David Carnoy (cnet.com) - Feb, 2009

There's an interesting new niche market developing in the media player arena as storage companies like Western Digital, SanDisk, and Iomega look for a way to tap the growing number of consumers who have multimedia files stored on their computers and...

Compact adapter allows for playback of USB-based multimedia files on TV; reads a lot of file formats; both HDMI and composite video connections; able to connect up to two mass USB storage devices at one time via side- and rear-mounted USB ports; up to...

Couldn't play back audio on some files; no networking capabilities; eSATA, FireWire, or flash media reader options would've been nice as well

While it isn't infallible, the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player plays back a wide array of audio, video, and image files on your TV without the need for a computer.

Award: RECOMMENDED PRODUCT

With so much digital media available at our fingertips, the computer has become a trusty companion when it comes to content management. It may be busting at the seams, but it's a nice alternative for those that don't have thousands of dollars to plunk...

Insanely easy setup; works for Mac and PC users; provides great audio playback; photos and video are incredibly sharp

Doesn't have love for DRM content; no HDMI cable included

When small screens just doesn't deliver, the WD TV HD Media Player makes the transition from small to big screen seamless.

I haven't bought one, but wouldn't you want the latest 2x TV tuner (thinking of the next generation -HD) in it to record as well as play back and both at the same time. Possibly fit the HDDs (not necessarily USB) yourself in the machine, so you do not...
