Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme review

  by Dong Ngo (cnet.co.uk) - Sep, 2008

cnet.co.uk

The Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme offers three inputs and a useful software bundle for a fair price per gigabyte. There's little not to like about this external drive

Decent throughput performance ; Supports eSATA, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces ; Decent bundle software ; Quiet and cool during operation

ESATA connection needs reset after idling ; No FireWire 800 ; ESATA cable not included

We did notice, however, that the FreeAgent Xtreme's eSATA connections would appear disconnected after an hour or so of idling, and we had to repower the drive for eSATA to be recognised by the system again. While this doesn't affect the data stored on...

Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme 1TB

  by Alex Kidman (cnet.com.au) - Oct, 2008

cnet.com.au

Seagate's Xtreme has some extremely good speeds, but it's also extremely ordinary to look at.

USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 or eSATA ; Manager utility for backups ; Good eSATA speeds

Looks like a router ; No bundled eSATA cable

If you're after a solid drive with some excellent speeds once you progress beyond USB, then the Xtreme is a good choice. Just don't expect it to be a particularly attractive drive.

Review: Seagate FreeAgent XTreme External Drive

  by Doug Goldring (geardiary.com) - Aug, 2009

geardiary.com

I continue to be amazed by how much storage hard drive manufacturers cram into an extremely small space.  Not long ago, I looked at the MoreSpace drive, and was blown away by its full terabyte of storage.  So, you can imagine my delight when only a few...

Seagate FreeAgent XTreme

  by David Bayon (pcauthority.com.au)

Stylish and versatile, its only drawback is the mammoth price

While it’s not the fastest of the lot we saw some blistering performance, transferring 1000 small files in under a second and 650mb in ten. However, straight out of the box this is all moot as Seagate haven’t included an eSata cable – another strange...

Seagate is unprofessional with all of their products. I have this and it doesn't gaurantee your work will come back if the product just magically disapears and doesn't work. a hard drive is a back up so why do i have a man on the phone in america...

Easy to use, no probs so far

I've had a 1TB version of this drive for some time now, and have had no problems (so far!). My previous LaCie external drive had suffered occasional intermittent errors, making it unreliable as storage or back-up. So when I needed extra storage, I...

Seagate 1.5TB External Hard Drive

Brilliant but eSata can be fiddly

Brilliant but eSata can be fiddly

Firewire and USB worked straight away but I had to update the driver for my ASUS motherboard (P5N-E SLI) to get eSata working. Now it runs very quickly and quietly - worth the effort to get eSata. I didn't install the backup software included, I used...

USB/ firewire fine but eSata.... omg!

Bought this to go with my Dell XPS 345 running 64bit Vista. Out of the box, it worked fine with firewire and usb but that's not the reason l bought it. Not surprisingly, if you buy this you are paying a price premium for the speed of eSata. When it...

Excellent

Very happy with this drive. Whisper quiet. Very fast data transfer (FW800). Instantly recognised by Time Machine. The only minor gripe is that the 'on' light is quite bright. Mine resides on a shelf under my desk so it doesn't bother me but if you plan...

Be warned - do not rely on this drive for valuable data

I am a director of an IT company - I was attracted by the large capacity and super fast eSata - so we bought 5 of them - big mistake! The software is not 64 bit compatable (crazy if you want eSata, you are likely to be using 64 bit) - the default...

I chose this as lots of people had reported problems with the Western Digital equivalent, the Seagate was also cheaper! Runs perfectly, I use it almost exclusively for TimeMachine, it goes to sleep when not in use and wakes without problem when my iMac...
